Stephen Fynes-Clinton was educated at Ascot State School and Brisbane Grammar School, and graduated from University of Queensland with a B Econ in 1983 and LLB (Hons) in 1985. From 1985 until 2003 he practised as a solicitor as a partner of, and later consultant to, King and Company which was and remains a specialist firm focussing on providing legal services to local government.  He was admitted to the bar in 2003, and has a practice comprising more or less equal parts of work in the Planning and Environment Court, Land Court and, mainly for administrative law matters, the Supreme Court.
